Clash of Kitchens

Each month in Sunday Kids Church we are trying to have one fun event that fits with the lesson and theme of our series. For the last few weeks we have been doing our new series Soul Food. For this series we came up with an idea to have a cooking competition similar to Chopped Junior that would be performed on stage for the kids to watch and be a part of! But we called it “Clash of Kitchens”. Our lesson for that week was about Christ winning the victory for us! So we were able to tie it into the lesson very nicely!

We decided to have 3 teams of two preteen who would compete in 2 challenges to win the “Gourmet Kitchen 9000” The contestants were judged by 3 of the worlds finest chefs. Chef Darren Delicious, Chef Guido, and the Queen of Cooking herself.

To pull all of this off, I set up a meeting with the preteens that I asked to be the competitors and the kids leaders I had asked to be involved. We needed stage hands to prep the stage between sessions, a lights person, a sound guy, special effects person (fog machine), a show host, and the judges. We have a midweek service on Wednesday nights so usually that is a great time to have meetings like this because they will most likely be attending church anyway. Once they were all gathered I explained their roles and special responsibilities as well as the vision behind it!

Each team of Chefs had to write their own back story for their intro video! It was hilarious what they came up with!

After lots of planning it finally came time for our Clash of Kitchens! I was amazed at how it went having had no rehearsal before hand!

Our First Challenge was the “Pancake Decorating Challenge” In this challenge our contestants had 5 minutes to make a pancake with some creative style to impress the judges!

After the first challenge the kids got to try their hand at being a chef as well with our small group game “Banana Surgery”.

Then Pastor Jesse shared a great message on how God has won the challenge for us, that we could never win!

This was a blast for everyone who was a part of Clash of Kitchens! Our kids had so much fun and even our leaders! I was so happy to receive so much positive feedback from our team after this! After the event I texted each of our leaders who helped to say thank you and each of them had something really encouraging to say.  One of our leaders said that they were so thankful to be a part of such an amazing ministry. Another said that she was so amazed that she could have so much fun serving the Lord and these kids! Every other leader had something good to say as well!

If you should ever want to do something similar to this I have included some of the videos we made as well as some of  the documents I made to make this simple to understand for our leaders!
